Hayley Barnhill Wins $10,000 North American Junior Amateur Owner Class Another Year.  Victoria Colvin and For The Laughter Earn Grand Champion Pony Hunter while Chelsea Cohn and Crimson Sky Claimed Tricolor in the Children's Pony Hunters.

Meg O'Mara thought when she had a rail in the jump-off of tonight's final round for the $15,000 North American Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Challenge Cup, that would be the end of her day. It turned out that her second and third places in the two rounds of the Challenge Cup left her tied with Kirstie Dobbs and Treesdale Farms' Eso, and another jump-off would be needed to determine the overall winner of the Challenge Cup, sponsored by ARIAT. With a clear round in the second jump-off, O'Mara and Mianta owned by Quiet Winter Farm and Redfield Farm, sealed their victory. The winner of the $10,000 Final Round, sponsored by The Oken Family, was Hayley Barnhill on Scotch, owned by Boggs Hill.

In yesterday's $5,000 First Round, sponsored by Kate Considine/Willow Brook Stables, Dobbs and Eso had the fastest speed round for the win. With that win and a fifth in the final round, Dobbs had 45 points, which tied her with O'Mara and Mianta, who finished third in the speed round and second in the final round.

For her Time First Round victory tonight, Barnhill was presented with the Remy Martin Perpetual Trophy, donated by Rolling Acres and Melanie Wright. Seventeen-year-old Barnhill, from Collierville, TN, has only ridden Scotch at one other show, but noted, “The horse is awesome. We don't know him that well, but he's so cool. He's so scopey.”

In the jump-off for the final round, she was the only clear trip. “I didn't know how he was going to go, but it was really fun. I'd never gone fast on him before, but we decided to just go for the clear round,” she explained.

O'Mara won the Best Junior Jumper Rider Award along with the ARIAT Congressional Cup, while Dobbs was named the Best Amateur Jumper Rider, sponsored by Lyman T. Whitehead and Eight Fences LLC.

NEWSFLASH: John French wins WCHR Pro Finals PDF Print E-mail

Congratulations to John French, the 2011 winner of the WCHR Professional Finals held tonight at the Capital Challenge. The six riders competed in four rounds on four different horses. Announcer Kenny Kraus described the evening's event the best.  He announced, "Tonight we will watch the cream of the crop - the greatest hunter riders in the world - going head to head in a demonstration of hunter riding...

"When you watch tonight's class unfold, and you observe the incredible skill that these six riders possess, think about the amount of talent possessed by the entire roster of riders competing here at the Capital Challenge and think about the many riders that just missed the cut...some of them by just a few points."

The Pro Finals can often come down to the luck of the draw...the right horse, at the right time, over the right course. Tonight was John's night, and as the best hunter riders showed us a demonstration of the incredible talent that makes them the winningest hunter riders in the world, John showed us the brilliance that made him the winner tonight.  Congratulations John.

Victoria Colvin Sweeps Junior Hunters, Rides Ovation to Grand Junior Hunter Championship/Rosebud and Audrey Layman Named Grand Children's Hunter Champions PDF Print E-mail

The Capital Challenge Horse show wrapped up another year of fantastic competition today and finished with younger junior and children's hunters. Victoria Colvin swept the junior hunter awards today by winning all four tricolors. She and Scott Stewart's Ovation were awarded the Grand Junior Hunter Championship sponsored by Lochmoor Stables/Mindy and Greg Darst, while the Grand Children's Hunter Championship went to Rosebud and Audrey Layman. The Capital Challenge Horse Show is held at the Prince George's Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, MD.
Colvin and Ovation won through their championship performance in the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under division. They were also the High Point Junior Hunter 15 & Under, sponsored by Susie and Weatherly Stroh. Colvin swept the Small Junior Working Hunter 15 & Under division sponsored by Cynthia Williams/New England Farm; she was also reserve champion on Sanzibar, owned by Karen Long Dwight and Barbara Ridder Irwin. Ovation jumped to two blue ribbons and a fourth place, and he won the under saddle class. Sanzibar finished second, third, and fifth over fences and was sixth under saddle.
Ovation, an 11-year-old Warmblood gelding, competed at Devon with Colvin and they were champions at Lake Placid, but both horse and rider have taken a break from showing for the past few weeks. Colvin described Ovation as having “the best canter.” She added, “It's like a couch and it's perfect. He jumps good, but it doesn't feel like it, so you don't get popped out of the tack and you don't fall off.”
For their win, Colvin and Ovation were presented with The Spontaneous Perpetual Trophy donated by the Listrani Family. Colvin was named the Best Junior Rider, an award sponsored by Karen Healey and Karen Healey Stables. The EMO Junior Trip of the show went to Small Affair and Olivia Esse, who were champions in the Large Junior 16-17 Hunter division yesterday.
The champion in the Large Junior Working Hunter 15 & Under division sponsored by Oscany Inc, was Dr. Betsee Parker's Way Cool, a nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Embassy. They placed first, first, and second over fences. Inclusive, owned by Scott Stewart, was second, second, and third for the reserve championship.
