Beacon Hill Students Finish One-Two in Monarch International Championship
Upper Marlboro, MD – (October 2, 2005) Brianne Goutal, 17, of New York, NY, returned to the Capital Challenge Horse Show this year and bested her 2004 second-place finish in the Monarch International’s Show Circuit Magazine North American Equitation Championship. Topping a field of 107 competitors Goutal rode her horse Logan to a blue-ribbon finish. Goutal led the two-round class with a 92.2 in the first trip and clinched the lead with brilliant second round that the panel of five judges scored a 92.6. The North American Championship is a highlight of the Monarch International Equitation Weekend, held on the first weekend of the Capital Challenge Horse Show.
Second place in the North American Championship class went to Sloan Coles of The Plains, VA, who rode Cino to scores of 90.6 and 86.7 in the first and second round respectively. She held the second place by a hair – her total of 177.3 was only 1/10th of a point higher than Natalie Ray Medlock of California who earned the third. Both riders train with Frank and Stacia Madden at Beacon Hill Farm and enjoyed the course designed by Michael Rheinheimer. Some areas gave riders a challenge. Goutal said, “There were a lot of bending lines that you had to move up but at the same time you had to hold your horse out and a lot of people got caught trying to line it up or were getting dead to the second jump.” Coles added, “The first jump (in the second course) the horse was kind of blind to it. It was at a funny angle and Brianne was the only one who really got up to it at a good pace.” The Capital Challenge Horse Show runs through Sunday, October 9 and will showcase the nation’s best hunters and jumpers. The $50,000 Ariat Congressional Cup Grand Prix presented by Stillwell-Hansen Inc. and Arwen Stables is the highlight of the jumper action. Held at 7:30pm on Saturday, October 8 the FEI World Cup Qualifying class is a great opportunity to witness US Equestrian Team veterans tackle a demanding course. As always, admission to the show is free and classes run in two rings throughout the day. Evening classes are held Wednesday through Saturday.
